Edmonton food commons

A twin crisis

At ICChange we are working in our home city of Edmonton to wrestle with the systemic challenges of homelessness and food security. These are complex, interconnected crises that impact individuals and families across Alberta's capital region.

Targeted interventions

The journey begins with targeted interventions.

  • We provide financial literacy programs to equip individuals with the tools to navigate economic instability.

  • We also align food and housing supports to ensure that families in need do not need to face a labyrinth of disconnected services.

  • We recognize that mental health can be a factor in homelessness, so we provide health programs focussed on addressing trauma and reducing dependence on acute care systems.

Outcomes

We ensure that individuals and families have access to essential resources at the outset. Over time, the integration of service hubs (one stop centres for housing, food and health) emerge to offer individuals dignity and seamless support.

As these efforts scale, mid-term outcomes include policies becoming more flexible and adapting to the needs of diverse populations. Community-driven models prioritize inclusion and equity, from Indigenous-led housing projects to multicultural food security programs.

Our long-term vision is a society transformed, with families free from hunger and with the tools to build their own better future. This is our blue print for sustained social impact, grounded in collaboration and driven by the belief that resilient communities begin with systemic change.

By aligning efforts, sharing resources, and amplifying voices, Edmonton can lead the way in creating a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
